Speckled Wood

This Speckled Wood Butterfly was snapped sunbathing on my balcony’s climbing hydrangea. Its caterpillars feed exclusively on tall, wild grasses which grow in dappled shade – a habitat which is currently found throughout Birley Fields which is just across the road from me. Sadly, when MMU build their new campus there, most of the rough, shady grassland will be lost.
